What Causes Pregnancy-Related Issues?

Pregnancy brings many changes that can lead to discomfort. Here are the key factors, explained simply:

  • Hormonal Shifts: Relaxin and other pregnancy hormones soften your ligaments to help prepare for birth. This can make joints—especially in your pelvis and spine—feel less stable, leading to aches when you move, stand or turn in bed.
  • Growing Load: As your baby develops, your abdomen expands and your centre of gravity shifts forward. That extra weight puts strain on your lower back, hips and knees, making everyday tasks like lifting groceries or standing for long periods more tiring.
  • Postural Adaptations: To stay balanced, your body arches your lower back more, tilts your pelvis and may roll your shoulders back. Some muscles (hip flexors, back extensors) become overworked and tight, while others (abdominals, glutes) get overstretched, causing muscle imbalances and tension.
  • Pelvic Floor Pressure: The growing baby places constant downward pressure on your pelvic floor muscles. Over time, this can weaken their ability to support your bladder and bowel, resulting in leaks or a sense of heaviness.
  • Diastasis Recti Risk: As the uterus expands, the two sides of your abdominal muscles can separate. If your deep core muscles can’t keep up, you may notice a bulge down the midline of your belly, along with core weakness and back discomfort.
  • Circulatory Changes: Your blood volume increases and blood vessels relax under hormonal influence. This can cause swelling (edema) in your ankles and feet or the development of varicose veins, adding to overall discomfort.
