Incontinence

Got a wee problem? We can help.

There are 3 main types of urinary incontinence:

  • Stress Urinary Incontinence which involves bladder leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing or when you move quickly or suddenly, such as with exercise.
  • Urge Urinary Incontinence which involves moments of urgency to rush to the toilet
  • Overactive bladder syndrome which involves the need to urinate often. You may feel that you need to plan your day around very regular visits to the toilets.

Often these types of incontinence can overlap, and you may experience two or more of these bladder control problems. Other types of incontinence include urge urinary incontinence and mixed urinary incontinence. Common causes of incontinence can be pregnancy, childbirth, age-related changes, prostate problems, pelvis organ prolapse, menopause, hysterectomy, obstruction or neurological disorders.

How can Physio help?

Everyone needs strong pelvic floor muscles. We can help you gain control once again over your bladder with pelvic floor muscle retraining. Incontinence Physiotherapy his to teach pelvic floor exercises and pelvic floor muscle training.

Sometimes you may need to learn to relax, rather than strengthen your pelvic floor muscles as they may be overactive and in spasm, causing poor bladder control. Good pelvic floor muscle tone is essential for the support of your pelvic organs, for normal bladder and bowel function, for good sexual function and for postural support of your pelvis and spine.
